Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are so excited for another season of Girls on the Run at Monee Elementary! Please read below to learn more about the program, including the requirements and commitments.

About the Program…
The Girls on the Run program includes lessons to encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. Participants explore and share their own beliefs around experiences, and discuss challenges girls face at this age.  We start with helping the girls get a better understanding of who they are and what’s important to them. Next, we look at the importance of teamwork and healthy relationships. And, finally, the girls explore how they can positively connect with and shape the world.

Physical activity is woven into our program to inspire an appreciation of fitness and to build habits that lead to a lifetime of health.  At the end of the three month season, the girls participate in a Girls on the Run 5k (3.1 miles) run. This celebratory, non-competitive event is the culminating experience of the curriculum. Completing the 5k gives the girls a tangible understanding of the confidence that comes through accomplishment as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. Crossing the finish line is a defining moment when the girls realize that even the seemingly impossible IS possible!

Parent/Guardian Expectations
  • Girls are expected to attend all practices. Your girl should not sign up for this this season if she has prior engagements that conflict with GOTR sessions because she should not take a space from someone that can commit to the entire season.
  • Girls should bring appropriate running clothes—we will be practicing inside on cold or rainy days; later in the season we will primarily be outside. They should wear comfortable clothing and running shoes. Flip flops, boots, dress shoes, etc. will NOT be allowed. For safety reasons, your girl will not be able to run that day unless she is wearing appropriate shoes.
  • Girls will be dismissed from the front of the building by the main office. Coaches are volunteers—parents are expected to pick up their participant at the end of each session in a timely fashion. If an emergency arises and you will be late, please call the Monee Elementary main office at (708) 367-2600.
5k Day!
Each girl is already registered for the 5k event. Each girl needs to have a Running Buddy to run with her, keep her safe on the course and be her own personal cheerleader! Running buddies must be at least 18 years old. Please help your participant start thinking about possible Running Buddies. Each Running Buddy MUST register for the 5k which is an additional cost. If you need help finding a Running Buddy, please let your Site Coordinator know. The 5k is open to the public, so any friends or family members can register to run too! Please note that the 5k registration cost will increase the closer it gets to race day, so register early!
