On May 5, 2026, Monee Elementary School hosted a Bike Bus event, bringing students together for a unique and engaging ride to school. A Bike Bus is a group of students who travel along a planned route on bicycles, supervised by adults—similar to a walking school bus, but on bikes.

The initiative was designed to promote healthy habits and physical activity, while also fostering confidence, independence, and a sense of community. The event also provided a fun and social way for students to start their school day.

The idea was introduced by Monee Elementary resource teacher Michelle Smith, who is an avid cyclist and enjoys riding with her family. After presenting the concept to school administration, staff quickly collaborated to organize and implement the event.

Although the morning began with light rain, it did not deter participants. Students demonstrated determination and enthusiasm as they rode from Fireman’s Park to the school, accompanied by staff, parents, and family members. The Village of Monee Police Department escorted our team to help ensure a safe and smooth journey.

Throughout the ride, staff emphasized that the Bike Bus was not a race, but rather a ride to build perseverance, encourage one another, and strengthen community connections. The positive energy was evident as students cheered each other on along the route.

At the end of the school day, students rode their bikes back to Fireman’s Park, where families gathered to greet them. The event concluded with the presentation of certificates, and each participant received a bike bell as a keepsake.

The Bike Bus was a meaningful and memorable experience for all involved. Monee Elementary extends its gratitude to the students, families, staff, and the Village of Monee Police Department for their support in making the event a success.
